The Donation Box for 12-2-14
The Donation Box for 12-2-14 is in honor of Giving Tuesday and is made up of items we purchased with coupons and had in our pantry. We have a good bit more popcorn to donate but I didn’t gather it together fast enough for this one. (personal organization deficiency issues again.. lol ) The Twizzlers were an extra bag from Halloween that I’ve been meaning to donate. It appears I did such a good job hiding them from our son that I hid them from myself as well. Do y’all do that or is it just me? (Perhaps it’s just plain old age setting in)
The bargain hunting events of Black Friday and Cyber Monday have passed and we’ve shifted our focus to giving. Giving Tuesday is a campaign dedicated to giving back. It focuses on the generous spirit of those during the holiday season and is designated for the Tuesday after Thanksgiving. This day is a movement that began just two years ago, November 27, 2012, to create a national day of giving and generosity. The focus is centered around the idea that everyone has a role, whether large or small, in helping others. Hopefully, #givingTuesday will tap into human kindness and be a household word along with black Friday and cyber Monday every year! There are a number of charities out there and many hoping you choose them for your Giving Tuesday. Be sure to check the Charity Watch website or Charity Navigator (both recommended by the Federal Trade Commission) before you donate from a solicitation. Should you choose to donation money, be sure to go directly to the website of the organization. Please don’t simply click on a link in your email and enter your credit card number.. and remember, charities don’t need your social security number or bank account information. Sadly, there will always be someone out there eager to take advantage of others’ generosity and goodwill.
Of course you can always donate or volunteer at your local food pantry, but here are some other ideas for how you can give:
- Oral Cancer Foundation – Here’s a charity we have a personal interest in. We would love for you to consider a donation to OCF. (every little bit helps!) Money spent on raising awareness and screening/early detection can save many lives. Close to 44 thousand Americans will be diagnosed with oral cancer this year. Only slightly more than half will be alive in 5 years. The death rate associated with cancer is high because it’s being discovered late in its development. Here’s a post we did on oral cancer including a powerful narrative from another member of OCF.
- [email protected] – Bill and Melinda Gates announced on Melinda’s Facebook and Bill’s Facebook page that they will match your monetary contribution up to $200,000!
- Walmart Food Pantry Holiday Makeover – Walmart will donate a total of $1.5 Million to 75 food pantries. You need to vote to help them decide which ones!
We’d love to hear from more of you that do a little something special for others this season. We know there’s a lot of you out there giving food and clothing, donating time or money to a cause, or adopting a person or family for the holidays. The couponing community tends to be very generous to those that need assistance. Perhaps you even invited someone less fortunate to your Thanksgiving feast? Doesn’t it feel great to help others in some way?! I love that couponing allows us to donate so much more.
To find local organizations to donate food and personal items, search Feeding America or Food Pantries. You can also inquire at local churches. They can usually suggest a local organization or they may have a food pantry of their own.

|If you’re not familiar with what The Donation Box is, this is a box we keep in a corner of our house that we add items to for a Saturday morning delivery to the local Co-op Ministries . Since we’ve been couponing, we have grown a nice stockpile of items so now we try to put some aside and do our small part to help others. (You can view our other delivery posts here). Other than a little extra time, there is no reason for us to pass up a free or ridiculously cheap deal… we know someone needs those items! Our boxes usually include a combination of things we purchased the current week and items from our stockpile that we have overstocked. We hope we inspire others to do the same! Whether it’s a donation of money, time, or items.. it all matters to someone!|
