 Split Pea Soup With Ham

Split Pea Soup with Ham, Warm and Comforting!

This split pea soup with ham recipe makes a delicious frugal meal! With just a bag of peas, a handful of veggies and some leftover ham you can create a nice warm pot of this wonderful soup.  It is comfort food in a bowl that really warms you up on a cold day. I love to watch the guys faces light up when they see a big bowl of this soup along with some crunchy garlic toasts for dunking. We like a little cayenne pepper sprinkled on top of ours to give it just a touch more heat, but this is completely optional.

Split pea soup with ham is a great way to use up a leftover ham bone if you have had a ham for dinner in the last week or so. We don’t like to waste anything, so we use every last bit of a ham when we have one. If you do not have a ham bone, you can use a couple cups of cut up smoked ham.

I like to make little crunchy garlic toasts to serve with this split pea soup with ham. They add a wonderful crunchiness to the meal. I slice a baguette. Then I spread with butter, sprinkle with garlic salt and Parmesan cheese and bake at 375 degrees for about 5 minutes until browned and crunchy. This soup would also be very good served with a slice of this Southern Buttermilk Cornbread.
