Portobello Gorgonzola Burger Recipe
Each one of these mouthwatering Portobello Gorgonzola Burgers includes ¼ pound of ground sirloin which nestles down into a bed of sweet roasted peppers and sauteed onions. It is then topped with delicious Gorgonzola sauce and a Portobello mushroom cap before placing the top of the bun in place to complete it.
Recipe type: Sandwich
Cuisine: American
Serves: 4
  • 2 Tablespoons mayonnaise
  • 1 Tablespoon sour cream
  • ¼ cup Gorgonzola cheese
  • 1 teaspoon horseradish
  • 1 bag sweet mini peppers 6 oz, roasted following instructions found below
  • 4 large Portobello mushroom caps, stems removed, cleaned and roasted following instructions found below.
  • 2 small onions, sliced and sauteed
  • 1 pound ground sirloin
  • 1 teaspoon season salt
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon Accent
  • pepper to taste
  • 4 slices Swiss cheese
  • 4 French hamburger buns (I buy these at Publix). If these are not available just make sure to use good bakery rolls.
  1. Prepare the sauce first by mixing the first four ingredients in a small bowl and store covered in fridge until ready to use.
  2. Preheat oven to 425 degrees. You will bake the mushrooms and peppers together on the same setting.
  3. Prepare the roasted peppers, instructions found below.
  4. Remove stems and use a spoon to scrape gills from bottom side of cap.
  5. Brush with olive oil. Place on foil lined pan gill side up.
  6. Bake at 425 degrees for about 8 minutes, flip them over and cook for another 8-15 minutes watching for tenderness.
  7. While the peppers and mushrooms are in the oven begin making your burgers.
  8. Saute onions.
  9. Add seasoned salt, Accent, garlic powder and pepper to the ground sirloin.
  10. Gently massage the seasoning into meat. Do not overwork or you will have tight tough burgers.
  11. Divide ground sirloin into 4 even pieces.
  12. Fform your burgers about the size to fit the buns. Again, do not pack tight or overwork the meat.
  13. Make a slight indent in the center of the patty with your thumb so it does not puff when cooking.
  14. Heat a 10 inch skillet over medium heat. When the pan has come to temperature (when a drop of water dances on the surface), add the burgers.
  15. Cook for 4-5 minutes on each side for rare, or until the juices start running clear. For medium cook about 6 minutes on each side. For well done add a cover and let them cook an additional 2 minutes.
  16. At the very end of cooking time lay a slice of Swiss cheese on top of each burger allowing just long enough for it to begin to wrap around the burger.
  17. Remove from pan to plate allowing burgers to sit 5 minutes to seal in juices while you saute the onions.
  18. Slice buns in half to open and place in oven for just 2-3 minutes to heat while the burgers seal.
  19. Assemble with bottom bun, bed of onions and peppers, burger, sauce, mushroom cap, top bun.
